Prosperos reminds me of the best used and rare book stores in the Village in NYC. It is full of wonderful things to read. I can take my time and browse, or have assistance, and often find treasures. (I love small poetry books, especially those from poets around the world.) Prosperos also has musical offerings in its upstairs floor periodically. In this new DVD edition, each of the books is a chapter. *** Prospero, once the Duke of Milan, now reigns over a faraway island, living there with his only daughter, Miranda. Editorial Reviews. A radical re-interpretation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, Peter Greenaway's Prospero's Books stars Sir John Gielgud as the title character, the former Duke of Milan exiled to a remote island to live with his cherished books and daughter Miranda (Isabelle Pasco). A linear adaptation of The Tempest this is not, however: for Greenaway, the books are more important than Prospero. Reading this book the second time around just confirms what a brilliant writer Durrell is. My love affair with his works began in my twenties with the four novels comprising what would later become The Alexandria Quartet, and his subsequent novels mainly written in France including the magnificent book The Avignon Quintet: Monsieur, Livia, Constance, Sebastian and Quinx/5.

Peter Greenaway’s “Prospero’s Books” is not a movie in the sense that we usually employ the word. It’s an experiment in form and content.

It is likely to bore most audiences, but will enchant others -- especially those able to free themselves from the notion that movies must tell stories.

This film should be approached like a record album or an art book. Search for the desired book: by title, description, ISBN, author, publisher.

Upon discovering that her father has gone missing, she must discover the location of her other siblings and convince them to save their father, before the Three Shadowed Ones destroy the Family Prospero.

The play's opening scene is set in the midst of a murderous storm, which would seem to suggest that The Tempest is going to be as dark as, say, Macbeth, which also happens to begin with a terrible storm.

This play, though, is most definitely not Macbeth. Soon enough, we learn from the tricksy spirit Ariel that not a soul on the ship was harmed.
